media art in North Rhine-Westphalia
assets preservation presentation
23 October 2008
Some of the most important media collections of Germany are to be found in North Rhine-Westphalia. How should these valuable assets be preserved in the long-term and made available? In co-operation with the state and the Association of German Cities and Towns (Städtetag), North Rhine-Westphalia together with imai (inter media art institute) organises a conference dedicated to the specific problem areas connected with the preservation and re-staging of media-based space installations.
Research carried out on the current assets in collections of media art in North Rhine-Westphalia has shown that the collections in the state include numerous works of art based on new media such as video, computer programs or electronically stored music. These assets, however, are increasingly in danger due to the rapid ageing of the technology used and data media. In particular, installations represent a challenge because there is often an absence of defined criteria for their presentation. The handling of media art therefore confronts curators, art historians and restorers with complex practical and theoretical questions.
In the course of the research project Materialization of the Fugitive , imai (inter media art institute) is intensively addressing this problem. At the end of the first year of research the time has come to publish the first results derived from the CASE STUDIES assessed up to now and simultaneously to encourage discussion of these results.
The conference should give political, administrative and institutional decision-makers an insight into the problems related to the preservation of media art and offer experts instruments to assist with the handling of this type of art. Thanks to the participation of speakers from Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands the conference allows the expert exchange of information on an international level as well as the networking of regional institutions.
A documentation brochure on the conference is available which can be ordered free of charge
