15.04.2011: Talk

Preserve video art - documentation, digitisation & archiving

with restorer Agathe Jarczyk, Atelier für Videokonservierung (Bern, Switzerland)

Friday, 15 April, 2011, 11 - 12 am, Videonale 13, Kunstmuseum Bonn

The renowned video festival for contemporary video art, the Bonn Videonale, opens its door on 14 April, 2011 in the Bonn art museum for the thirteenth time. Along with the exhibition the public will be offered an interesting supporting program with artist discussions, film screenings and talks. On 15 April imai will make a presentation together with Agathe Jarczyk, a restorer with extensive experience in the area of conservation and restoration of video art. Talk language: German.

Video art is an established part of many collections and is available in a number of different formats and data media. The preservation of this art requires the co operation of collectors, curators and restorers in order to take measures to facilitate conservation and also to initiate preventative measures already when acquiring new works.

Further measures require the identification and documentation of different formats. In the talk the parameters important for successful digitisation of analogue video are discussed together with possible reformatting of digital video. Examples of video sequences show damage to analogue and digital media.
