Projected Data Images. Testcuts
An exhibition staged by imai – inter media art institute at NRW-Forum Düsseldorf,
11. September - 21. November 2010
The foundation imai – inter media art institute presents Projected Data Images. Testcuts (2010), an exhibition by Katharina Sieverding. She is foremost among Düsseldorf-based artists in deploying various production formats that incorporate processes of media transition and transfer. The award-winning artist has figured prominently among the city’s avant-garde over the past four decades, and enjoys international renown.
On the occasion of Quadriennale 2010, imai has invited the artist Katharina Sieverding to realize her concept Projected Data Images. Testcuts
at NRW-Forum. Katharina Sieverding is noted for self-portraits,
large-size photographs and photo-installations that explore the context
of media images with regard to origin, production, code and suggestive
impact.
While planning the installation Projected Data Images. Testcuts,
around which the show centres, the artist for the first time extensively
reviewed her vast photographic archive built up in the course of more
than forty years. Instead of viewing the negatives, however, Sieverding
inspected her archive on the basis of test strips (“testcuts”) – the
fragmentary by-products of the analogue enlargement process. Now
assembled sequentially using digital montage, these random cut-outs from
over 1,800 photographs deliver a wealth of contemporary-historical
references. The living memory constructed in the process is individual
and ahistorical, recalling people, exhibitions and events in the art
world of Düsseldorf and other international venues from 1966 onward.
Several wall-to-wall projections join up to form a coherent frieze of
constantly changing images, hinting at cinematographic structures. The
fluctuating photographic constellations create a visual system of
intersecting content and subjects, connecting lines, planes of
reference, and spaces of reflection.
