Nam June Paik

Nam June Paik (born 1932 in Seoul, died 2006 in Miami) is seen as a pioneer of video and media art. Paik always perceived art as a continuous experiment and collage of heterogeneous strands to question processes in society, politics, technology and the world of business.
In the supporting program of the filmlab festival (info.pdf) of the Filmwerkstatt Duesseldorf imai will screen documentary videos from  Andreas Tröger and Ira Schneider on Paik's work.

Videos from the imai collection at the BLACK BOX

The "imai on screen" series will in future be a part of the programme of events of the Duesseldorf BLACK BOX art-house cinema. In combination with artist discussions, documentation and talks the venue will be used regularly to screen video art from the imai collection and distribution program. The start of this long-term co operation between the Duesseldorf Filmwerkstatt and imai – inter media art institute presents a retrospective of the American underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger, curated by the Filmwerkstatt in Duesseldorf.

Part 2 of the screening series in the Duesseldorf art-house cinema

imai has dedicated the second issue of the screening series in co-operation with the Duesseldorf art-house cinema to the 96-minute film "LEVEL-8" by Philipp Lachenmann. The film was inspired by Dante's "Divina Commedia", quantum physics and an Indian wall painting in Santa Fe. In 5 interviews mythical landscapes in the west of America meet the situation America found itself in after 11 September, 2001 – the momentous day which heralded a turning point in the US American self-perception and how America is perceived by others.

Premiere of the new screening series in the Black Box art cinema

The program of regular planned performances at the Duesseldorf Black Box art-house cinema opens with a selection of German and Korean artist videos. Each of the total seven works represents a section of the international video art creation of the last five years. Along with Gudrun Kemsa, Aki Nakazawa, Marcel Odenbach and Jan Verbeek from the imai distribution program, Hye Kyoung Ham, Jewyo Rhii and Haegue Yang from the South Korean IAS media distribution will be on view with new works.
